The News and Media Relations Coordinator serves as a member of MSSU's University Relations and Marketing team, and takes a lead role in the university's official news and messaging responsibilities. Earning coverage in the news media is a key strategy for increasing the University's name recognition, enhancing its reputation, and positioning it favorably to support student recruitment, alumni engagement, government and corporate relations.
Primary responsibilities include managing media relations serving as the university's point of contact, writing and disseminating press releases and feature stories, creating content for the university's employee newsletter, helping to plan and execute university town halls, press conferences, ribbon cuttings and MOSO Live virtual events. This position also develops and tracks earned media coverage, maintains records and creates reports and performs other related tasks.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Collaborates with URM director and team by identifying news and feature story opportunities across campus that demonstrate the success of our students, faculty and alumni
Build relationships with local and regional media to facilitate MSSU's media coverage in local, regional and national outlets
Drafts news releases, campus updates and related materials for distribution to media, university constituents and to campus employees
Serves as the primary point of contact for regional media outlets and reporters
Pitches story ideas, responds to media requests, serves as a university spokesperson, and helps coordinate university messaging in a variety of forms
Oversees MOSO Minute - university newsletter
Conceptualizes stories and contributes written pieces for university publications such as Crossroads Magazine, Crossroads Online, Remember When, MOSO Minute, etc.
Works with university writers and social media administrators to develop appropriate messaging and effective timing of messages
Develops and updates news media contact lists
Distributes news releases, story pitches and background material to journalists
Plans and staffs press conferences and other news media events
Plan and conduct media training with faculty members to better prepare them for on-camera and print interviews
Provide talking points and tips prior to media interviews
Update and promote MSSU media contact/beat list
Create, promote and maintain MSSU media center
Collaborate with URM director and other university employees to execute various university events, both live and virtual
Responsible for monitoring the overall reputation of the University in regards to media exposure and making recommendations regarding responses
Works directly with the university's URM director to ensure key messages are effectively developed and carried across all platforms to various constituent audiences
Work with the social media team on promoting news on MSSU's social media channels
Create and work with social media team to maintain MSSU news social media channels
Plan and prepare for upcoming media opportunities, anticipate media queries and help to prepare responses for administrators and faculty experts
Coordinate media tip sheets for upcoming events, such as inclement weather
Prepares monthly and quarterly tracking reports
Responsible for planning and directing the work of media relations student workers
Responsible for viewing and making recommendations regarding the related budgets

Education, Experience, and Licenses
A bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, or a related field is required
Journalism skills are required
Superior written and oral communications skills and familiarity with Associated Press style
Experience serving a higher education institution is preferred
A valid driver's license and the ability to meet insurance requirements for driving university provided vehicles is required

Demonstrate ability to effectively manage time and prioritize efforts; able to meet deadlines and work on and prioritize multiple initiatives simultaneously
Excellent attention to detail
Strong editing and proofreading skills are a must
Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
Requires the ability to be accountable for inventory/property management
Requires the ability to make recommendations that impact the budget
Requires the ability to use small office equipment, including computers, copy machines or multi-line telephone systems
Requires the ability to carry, lift and safely transport and/or ship equipment
Knowledge of higher education preferred
